The story of Pepsi Paloma, born Delia Dueñas Smith, remains one of the most controversial chapters in Philippine entertainment history. This Filipino-American dancer and actress rose to fame as a “Softdrink Beauty” in the 1980s but faced scandal and tragedy.
Paloma’s journey into the limelight began at just 14 years old when talent scout Tita Ester introduced her to talent manager Rey dela Cruz in 1980. By 1981, she debuted in the movie Brown Emmanuelle and adopted the stage name Pepsi Paloma, joining the ranks of fellow “Softdrink Beauties” Coca Nicolas and Sarsi Emmanuelle. The trio symbolized boldness and allure, and Paloma quickly became a recognizable figure in Philippine cinema.
The Rise and Fall of Pepsi Paloma: Fame, Scandal, and a Controversial Legacy
However, her career was overshadowed by a harrowing scandal. In 1982, Paloma accused comedians Vic Sotto, Joey de Leon, and Ricardo “Richie D’Horsie” Reyes of drugging and raping her at the Sulô Hotel in Quezon City. Paloma’s accusations sent shockwaves through the industry, as the alleged crime involved some of the nation’s most beloved entertainers. Reports indicated that future senator Tito Sotto, Vic Sotto’s older brother, intervened by allegedly intimidating Paloma into signing an Affidavit of Desistance to drop the charges. While the suspects avoided prosecution, the case remains a dark stain on Philippine entertainment history.
Tragically, on May 31, 1985, authorities discovered Paloma dead in her apartment, reportedly after she died by suicide. Investigators found a diary that allegedly detailed her financial and emotional struggles, though those close to her, including her manager Babette Corcuerra, questioned its authenticity. The rape case and its aftermath heavily influenced her untimely death. Loved ones laid Paloma to rest at Olongapo Memorial Park in Zambales, but her story continues to haunt and resonate in public memory.
In late 2024, filmmaker Darryl Yap reignited interest in Paloma’s life with the announcement of a film titled The Rapists of Pepsi Paloma. Set to portray the events surrounding the 1982 scandal, the project has sparked debate about its portrayal of sensitive events and the ethical implications of dramatizing real-life tragedies. The production team cast former child actress Rhed Bustamante as Paloma, sparking both anticipation and criticism.
Pepsi Paloma’s life is a stark reminder of the complexities of fame, the pursuit of justice, and the lingering effects of unresolved controversies. As discussions around the film and its subject continue, her story remains a critical lens through which to examine historical accountability and media representation.
