Nadine Lustre just got real with Bea Alonzo for the latter’s lie detector segment on her Youtube channel. While she’s one of the most sought-after stars of her generation, Nadine admitted that simply getting her foot in the door at the start of her career proved to be a challenge, especially for a morena like her.

When asked if she’d ever been discriminated at auditions, the actress answered, “Ang daming beses, mainly because of my skin color.” According to Nadine, she used to cue up in long lines for hours, only to be turned away the last minute. “Pauuwiin nila yung mga feeling nila hindi pasok. Mapapauwi ako kasi sasabihin nila ‘mestiza po hinahanap namin,’” recounted the actress.

She explained it happened multiple times in her youth that it took a hit on her confidence and developed into an insecurity, so much so that she resorted to glutathione treatments for lighter skin. In a talk she attended last year, Nadine also revealed that she was bullied by netizens for the same reason. “You know, as a young girl who was going through that, it made me feel na I was ugly and I wasn’t worth it.”

To this day, the actress continues to face unnecessary lashings online for her skin color, but she’s grown to take it with her head high, facing her bashers straight on. She tells Bea that she’s since also learned to celebrate her morena skin and that she doesn’t mind getting a darker tan now, considering her envious island-girl lifestyle in Siargao. “Hindi na ako ganon katakot na umitim. Morena naman talaga ako, pero yung ‘pag nasa Siargao ako, hindi na ako yung nag-co-cover o yung nagpapayong,” said Nadine.

In the same interview, Nadine got into discussing her different ventures apart from acting. One of which involves her recently launched website: an e-commerce platform where she sells her pre-loved fashion items, from high street brands to designer steals.

Probed about her involvement in the industry, Nadine revealed that she has plans to put up her own fashion line in the future. “Medyo marami pa naka-line up, so tignan natin kung kakayanin. Pero yun talaga yung gusto kong business, fashion talaga.”
