Authorities Seize 9 Cobras From Motorcycle Rider at Cotabato Checkpoint

A motorcycle rider was apprehended at a checkpoint in Cotabato City and the authorities discovered nine cobras hidden in his bag.

During the weekend, the police authorities stopped a motorcyclist at a checkpoint in M’lang, Cotabato, and discovered nine cobras hidden in his bag. The discovery took place during a routine Commission on Elections (Comelec) checkpoint operation.

While inspecting the man’s belongings, the police found the venomous snakes and questioned him about their origin and intended use. However, the man did not disclose clear details about where he got the cobras or what he planned to do with them.

The rider claimed to be immune to snake bites. He even showed bite marks on his hands and feet as proof of his alleged resistance to venom. Despite this strange claim, the authorities were focused on ensuring public safety and followed protocol.

Although the rider did not violate any specific rules of the Comelec checkpoint, the police confiscated the cobras due to concerns about wildlife protection and public safety. The seized snakes were later handed over to the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office or the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) for proper handling and care.

The incident also points out the importance of Republic Act 8485, or the Animal Welfare Act of 1998, which mandates the protection and humane treatment of animals. Whether found on land, in water, or in the air, all animals are entitled to care and safeguarding under the law.
