Former SEA Games Gold Medalist Mervin Guarte Passes Away

Mervin Guarte, a former SEA Games multi-medalist, passed away after being stabbed in Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro.



On Monday morning (January 6, 2024), the suspect, who remains unidentified, allegedly broke into the house where Guarte was sleeping and fatally stabbed him in the chest.

Guarte, who also served as an Airman First Class in the Philippine Air Force, had an impressive career. Starting as a silver medalist in the 2011 SEA Games for the men’s 800m and 1500m track events, he later transitioned to obstacle course racing.

In 2019, he clinched his first gold medal in the men’s 5km race when the Philippines hosted the SEA Games. He then brought home another gold at the 2023 SEA Games in Cambodia as part of the men’s relay team.

Authorities reported that Guarte had been drinking with friends in Camilmil Village before the incident. He later returned to the house of a barangay official, where he decided to sleep. At around 4:30 AM, the suspect entered the house and carried out the attack before quickly fleeing the scene.

Known for his passion for sports, the 33-year-old Guarte represented the Philippines across Southeast Asia for years, becoming a symbol of excellence both on the track and in obstacle racing.

He recently won the Spartan Asia Pacific Championship’s Men’s Beast 21km category, showing his continued dedication to his craft.

The entire sports community is mourning the untimely death of this talented and kind-hearted athlete. Guarte’s legacy as a champion and a teammate who always gave his best will be remembered by many. Police investigations are ongoing to bring justice to his tragic passing.
