Iza Calzado opened up about her mother

Actress Iza Calzado revealed her mother’s cause of death and she shared this heartbreaking story.

Iza is the daughter of Lito Calzado, a known choreographer and TV director back in the days. Her mother is Mary Ann Ussher. Being in the entertainment industry, the public somehow has glimpses of Iza’s personal life.

However, when it comes to her mother, the actress was not quite that open. Iza lost her mother in 2001, when she was just 19 years old. For the longest time, the actress has not opened up about what happened. It was just in 2019 when the actress mentioned this publicly.

In a recent interview on GMA afternoon talk show Fast Talk with Boy Abunda, Iza Calzado opened up about what she went through. “I lost my mother. She died by su!cide,” she said.

The actress said that she is not saying this proudly, and still it has weight on her. “I don’t want to attach anything to it except truth and grief, of course,” she added.

Then, she shared that her mother was sick and that she was bipolar. In her childhood, she saw her mother battling this mental issue. She did not understand it before, as how she understands it now. The actress had to face that scenario every day in her life back then. She was affected by people’s “baliw” comment on her mother.

It was so challenging for her because the dilemma came with the feeling of shame. Having that feeling, she felt embarrassed. However, right now, this is not the case anymore. It is no longer politically correct to call people “baliw” just because they are dealing with mental problems.

“Naging mas matatag ako. Alam ko, dahil sa lahat ng pinagdaanan ko bata pa lang ako, hindi lang sa pagkamatay ng aking nanay, kung hindi sa pinagdaanan namin bilang pamilya,” the actress said.

Iza Calzado also said that with all her might, she wants to take a better path than what her mother chose. The actress stressed that this is a battle inside of many people.
