Espiritu, Binarag Si VP Sara Sa Pangungumpara Sa Kanyang Amang Si FPRRD Kay Ninoy Aquino Jr.
Espiritu Slams VP Sara Over Her Comparison of FPRRD to Ninoy Aquino Jr.: “Outrageous and Dangerous”
Manila, Philippines –
Lawyer and activist Atty. Luke Espiritu did not hold back in his sharp rebuke of Vice President Sara Duterte, following her controversial warning that her father, former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte (FPRRD), might suffer the same fate as the late Ninoy Aquino Jr. if he returns to the Philippines.
Espiritu, known for his outspoken stance against political dynasties and human rights abuses, called the Vice President’s comments not only “irresponsible” but also “an insult to history.”
“To compare FPRRD — a man facing international investigations for alleged crimes against humanity — to Ninoy Aquino, a martyr who gave his life for democracy, is outrageous and dangerous,” Espiritu declared during a radio interview.
The statement came after VP Sara’s alleged remarks surfaced in political circles, where she warned her father that returning to the country could put his life in danger, referencing the assassination of Ninoy Aquino in 1983. Her statement has drawn both sympathy and criticism, with some interpreting it as a sincere concern for her father’s safety, while others — like Espiritu — believe it’s a strategic move to play the victim card.
“You Don’t Get to Rewrite History”
Espiritu didn’t mince words, adding:
“You don’t get to rewrite history to fit your family’s narrative. Ninoy Aquino died for freedom. FPRRD ruled with fear, with thousands of dead bodies in the streets.”
He went on to say that invoking Ninoy’s name to defend Duterte’s return was a “twisted manipulation of public emotion.” The comment has reignited debates around the weaponization of martyrdom, political branding, and the moral legacy of the Duterte administration.
Public Divided, Debate Intensifies
The issue quickly trended on social media with hashtags like #NotNinoy, #SaraDuterteWarning, and #EspirituSpeaks. Netizens were deeply divided — with pro-Duterte supporters defending Sara’s warning as a daughter’s concern, and critics echoing Espiritu’s sentiment that the comparison was offensive and misleading.
“Rodrigo Duterte is no Ninoy Aquino. One fought for democracy, the other fought against it,” tweeted one user.
“Sara’s warning shows there are real threats. This isn’t about legacy — it’s about protection,” wrote another.
Political Implications
Analysts suggest Espiritu’s strong response may bolster his visibility as a leading progressive voice, especially as the country heads toward the 2025 elections. It also puts VP Sara in a more vulnerable position — forcing her to clarify whether her statement was metaphorical, political, or based on real threats.
Meanwhile, former President Duterte has remained quiet amid the media storm, as speculation continues on whether he plans to return to the national stage — and if so, under what conditions.
