Leni Robredo On Arrest Of Former President Rodrigo Duterte

This is what Leni Robredo said when asked about the arrest of Rodrigo Duterte.

Former vice president Leni Robredo was asked during a press conference about her reaction to the arrest of former president Rodrigo Duterte.

During the time of Leni Robredo as the country’s vice president, the president was Rodrigo Duterte, and the latter is widely known for his war on drugs, which earned international attention.

On March 11, Duterte was arrested due to charges of crimes against humanity. The International Criminal Court has issued the arrest warrant, the local authorities have served it, and the former leader has surrendered. On the night of the same day of his arrest, he flew to The Hague.

During a press conference in Naga City, former vice president Leni Robredo was present. The former president’s arrest was brought up, and Robredo, as she expressed her reaction, could not help but compare the situation of Duterte and the situation of Leila De Lima during her incarceration.

According to her, De Lima faced everything head-on without questioning the due process. She faced and went through what she had gone through despite the false charges against her.

De Lima was put behind bars for seven years at Camp Crame over charges that were later dismissed.

The former vice president cited the difference between the two.

De Lima also reacted to Duterte’s arrest, which was personal for her. According to her, there was nothing wrong with the arrest, and she cited a Supreme Court ruling regarding the jurisdiction of the ICC over the country regarding the crimes that were committed while it was still a member of the international tribunal.

To recall, the country withdrew its membership in 2018, and it became official in 2019.

Republic Act No. 9851 stated that “our Philippine authorities, or government, can defer to an international tribunal and can surrender the subject of the investigation” to the international court.
