MARKKI STROEM – Actor Markki Stroem proudly represents the Philippines at Mister Universe 2024, turning heads with his Tikbalang-inspired national costume.

The Philippines is shining on the international stage as Markki Stroem proudly represents the country at the 2024 Mister Universe pageant. This prestigious event is being held in Los Angeles, California, from December 15 to 22, with the highly anticipated coronation night taking place today, December 23.

Markki Stroem has captured global attention with his stunning national costume inspired by the Tikbalang, a mythical creature from Philippine folklore. His ensemble, designed by Patrick Isorena, features a traditional bahag paired with striking gold elements, including a horse headpiece, arm and wrist cuffs, and intricately designed wings that resemble trees.

On his Instagram account, Markki Stroem shared breathtaking photos of the costume, accompanied by a detailed explanation of the Tikbalang’s origins and significance. “In Philippine folklore, the TIKBALANG is said to lurk in the rainforests of the Philippines. It is a half-human, half-horse, with the head and hooves of a horse,” he explained. Traditionally portrayed as a mischievous creature, the Tikbalang is believed to play tricks on travelers, leading them astray in the dense forests it inhabits.

However, Markki’s interpretation of the Tikbalang takes on a modern and meaningful twist. He reimagines the mythical being as an environmental guardian, symbolizing the fight against illegal logging and land grabbing. “In this multiverse, MY version of the Tikbalang has joined forces with Mother Nature to take down illegal loggers and land grabbers,” Markki wrote. “Joining forces to protect our magnificent ecosystems and save our environment.”
