In a recent interview, based on the article in Bandera, the actress talked about beauty standards, mental health, and environmental issues.

Nadine Lustres was tasked to discuss the topic “Darker skin is not beautiful.” She shared that when she was younger she would audition for different projects and girls who were mestiza or have lighter skin tones would always be chosen.

“I think when I was about 13, people would say that I was too dark. When I would go to auditions, where they would only cast girls who are mestiza, or have lighter skin, it became an insecurity of mine,” she shared.

With that insecurity, the actress tried ways to make her skin lighter. She admitted that she also used whitening soaps and even scrubbed her body with calamansi or lemon. However, as she became older, she learned to embrace her real self. “As I grew up, I learned to just love the skin that I’m in, and to just appreciate the beauty that I have,” the actress shared.

Nadine Lustre also shared that when she visited France, a lot of people expressed that they liked her skin. People would say that they wish they could have her tan. “People just don’t like what they have,” she added.
