WATCH: Judy Ann Santos and Wowie De Guzman’s wordless yet tearful goodbye in ‘Esperanza: The Movie’
We are used to seeing lovers in movies exchanging words of reassurance whenever they are faced with the most painful trials, particularly when they are forced to be apart. But imagine not even being allowed to say a proper goodbye to each other! How else can you tell your sweetheart that you will hold on and never let go?
Such was the extremely emotional and heartbreaking scene between lovers Esperanza (Judy Ann Santos) and Anton (Wowie De Guzman), when they had to part ways in the 1999 drama film “Esperanza: The Movie”, inspired by the similarly titled ABS-CBN hit TV series.
After Mayor Joaquin (Lito Legaspi) kicks out Esperanza and her siblings off his town, he even threatens to kill them should they dare come back! Anton therefore is forced to oblige to his father’s brutal orders. What he does instead is go to a terrace to at least see Esperanza take the road away from the town. He just heartbreakingly looks at Esperanza walking away, and in turn is seen by Esperanza who looks behind to see him as well.
In those few seconds of them looking at each other, we can feel Esperanza and Anton’s pain from being separated. There are no grand speeches, no big gestures — yet somehow, we feel their pact is strong and we are assured that neither of them will let go of each other.
