Diana Zubiri opens up about son King’s cleft palate journey

Diana Zubiri admitted that it wasn’t easy finding out that her first child, King, had a cleft palate.

On Thursday’s “Fast Talk with Boy Abunda,” Diana said that she kept crying, but she faced what was ahead of them.

“Happy naman ako na marami akong support system nung time na ‘yon,” she said.

Her late first husband, Alex Lopez, however, had a hard time accepting the situation.

“Hindi niya siyempre po matanggap. Kahit naman po ako, parang naiintindihan ko ‘yung gano’ng pakiramdam kasi nararamdaman ko rin, pero siyempre kailangan kaming dalawa. We support each other. Pero una po siyang bumitaw,” she said.

Diana also shared that it was the reason why she did not publicize her first pregnancy and why she and Alex separated.

“Kailangan kong protektahan din ‘yung anak ko, and then nagkakaroon ako ng marital problems din. ‘Yun actually ‘yung naging main reason kung bakit din kami naghiwalay. Nakuha ko nang buo ‘yung anak ko. Hindi niya nakita,” she said.

She eventually forgave Alex, and he got to see King again. Alex passed away in 2010.

King first asked Diana about his condition when they were already in Australia.

“Tinanong ko bakit niya ako tinatanong ngayon lang. Tapos sabi niya kasi may isa daw siyang classmate na parang binu-bully siya, ganiyan,” she said.

Diana apologized to her son for going through such things, but King said that she doesn’t need to explain.

“Isipin mo, Tito Boy, three months old pa lang siya, operation. Six months old, operation. Hanggang ngayon hindi pa rin tapos. Kaya happy ako na nasa Australia kasi sa Australia po, ‘yun talaga ‘yung pinaka-main na lugar para do’n sa operation niya.”

In 2015, Diana married Andy Smith. They have two daughters together, Aliyah and Mimi.

Diana currently stars in “Mga Batang Riles,” which airs weekdays on GMA Prime at 8:50 p.m after “Lolong: Bayani ng Bayan.”
