Sam Milby opens up about dealing with type 2 diabetes

Kapamilya actor Sam Milby recently shared his thoughts on living with diabetes and what he looks forward to in 2025, which marks his 20th year in showbiz.

Sam graced the opening of Avignon Clinic’s Alabang branch last December 2 where he got to chat with the press. “It’s going to be my 20th year anniversary, end of next year, to showbiz,” Sam reflected during the interview.

Having jumpstarted his showbiz career via the ABS-CBN reality show Pinoy Big Brother (PBB), Sam said, “PBB was 2005. Lumabas ako ng PBB house was November 5, 2005 so twenty years na. I just feel so blessed kasi katatapos pa lang ng contract signing with ABS-CBN. Just looking forward to the work that’s going to be coming up.”

The actor shared excitement for his projects, including Saving Grace, which is currently streaming on Prime Video and will also air on television in 2025. He also revealed that a movie he recently finished filming is set to be released around February or March next year.

As for how he plans to celebrate his 20th anniversary, Sam answered, “I think pag-uusapan muna sa management ko kung anong plans… We’ll see.”

Sam also expressed gratitude for the positive feedback on the first few episodes of Saving Grace, an adaptation that he described as a “beautiful story.”

“Kung maraming naiinis, ibig sabihin effective,” he said, referencing viewers’ strong reactions to the characters played by Jennica Garcia and Christian Bables.

He also recalled how the story was able to resonate with the audience during their show’s premiere night, praising the performance of child star Zia Grace. “Galing ng bata eh, umiyak lahat ng tao sa sinehan sa premiere night. She’s so good.”

Meanwhile, the 40-year-old actor opened up about his diabetes diagnosis, which he learned about last year. When asked for his New Year’s resolutions, Sam, although he said that he’ll think about it first, relayed, “One thing, I definitely want to do is going back to the gym more often and doing more cardio. I have diabetes. I’m not doing enough cardio, and that really helps for my blood sugar.”

“I found out [the diagnosis] last year when I was still in my 30s. Type 2. Which is crazy because hindi ako mahilig sa sweets. I’m not a dessert person. Pizza, pasta – hindi ako mahilig. I mean I enjoy but I rarely have it. Ako pa ang nagka-diabetes. It’s not in my family. My parents, ‘yung mga lola’t lolo, wala. So, I don’t know how I got it,” he said.

Sam shared that he manages the condition with oral medications and by monitoring his blood sugar daily. “Just something you live with. I have medicine. Hindi pa ako nag-iinject ng insulin, walang ganyan. I just have oral medicines that I take, at mas nag-iingat na ako sa mga kinakain and even drinks,” he said.

Despite the challenges, Sam remains collected, adding, “I mean so many people have it now. It sucks but it is a part of my life. It’s manageable. It’s just surprising ‘coz it’s not in my family and ‘yung nga, hindi ako mahilig sa sweets.”
