Nora Aunor shrugs off critics saying there are no big stars in MMFF 2016
Nora Aunor is happy to see the changes implemented in the 2016 Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF).
The Superstar leads the cast of the political drama Kabisera, which also stars Ricky Davao, JC de Vera, Jason Abalos, Victor Neri, Ces Quesada, Karl Medina, and Perla Bautista. Also part of the cast are RJ Agustin, Kiko Matos, and Ronwaldo Martin (younger brother of Coco Martin).
Inspired by a true story, Kabisera is co-directed by Real Florido and Arturo “Boy” San Agustin.
After four years, Nora makes her return to the MMFF. Her last MMFF entry was the Brillante Mendoza movie Thy Womb (2012).
She says about the film Kabisera, “Tungkol sa isang pamilya na akala ko, pamilyang perpekto.
Nora then praised the MMFF 2016 selection committee for their work in choosing the Magic 8.
There are those saying that there are no big stars in this year’s edition of the MMFF. What is Nora’s reaction to this?
To date, Nora has the most number of MMFF Best Actress awards, with eight earned over the years.
She was cited for Atsay (1978); Ina Ka Ng Anak Mo (1979); Himala (1982); Bulaklak sa City Jail (1984); Andrea, Paano Ba Ang Maging Isang Ina? (1990); Ang Totoong Buhay ni Pacita M. (1991); Muling Umawit ang Puso (1995); and Thy Womb (2012).
In 2015, The Hollywood Reporter described her as “The Grand Dame of Philippine Cinema.”
There are those criticizing the MMFF selection committee for picking indie films for the Magic 8.
Nora argued that their movie is not an indie film, even though it is produced by Firestarters Production, which is not one of the big studios in the country.
The film’s director, Real Florido, also shared this viewpoint.
“Galing ako sa indie film industry. I don’t consider it a different industry altogether,” said Real, who helmed the Cinemalaya 2014 entry 1st Ko Si 3rd.
As if to address criticisms about indie films, Direk Real told members of the press: “Ang Kabisera ay ginawa po talaga ito para sa pamilyang Pilipino.
Direk Real disclosed that it took them almost 16 months to finish the movie.
