President Bongbong Marcos believes that the arrest of former President Rodrigo Duterte was proper and correct.

Former president Rodrigo Duterte was arrested through a warrant issued by the International Criminal Court. The global court had ordered his arrest over the crimes against humanity over the deadly anti-drug war under his leadership that left thousands of lives claimed.

Duterte is now en route to The Hague, and current President Bongbong Marcos confirmed this. In a previous article, Vice President Sara Duterte issued a statement where she stressed that what happened was a “blatant affront” to the nation’s sovereignty and “an insult to every Filipino who believes in our nation’s independence.”

She added that this isn’t justice, but oppression and persecution.

In a press conference, PBBM addressed several inquiries about the arrest, and he expressed that it was proper and correct. He shared that the necessary legal procedure was followed and insisted that the arrest was done “because Interpol asked us to do it and we have commitments.”

Marcos said, “Interpol asked for help, and we obliged because we have commitments to Interpol which we have to fulfill. If we don’t do that, they will no longer help us with other cases involving Filipino fugitives abroad.”

The cooperation of the country is expected as part of the community of nations. The president also believes it did not violate the country’s sovereignty, as no documents or anything that the ICC asked related to the case was given.

The president also asserted that there were no irregularities with the arrest and denied any connection being rumored about the arrest with the upcoming elections. He said that the government is just doing its job.

The president also got a copy of the warrant even before the arrest was made, which “prompted the prosecutor-general of the Department of Justice to serve the warrant.
