Filipino fans and netizens are mourning the death of Taiwanese actress Barbie Hsu, best known for her role as Shancai in hit series “Meteor Garden.”

As of writing, topics including the name of Hsu and Meteor Garden are among the top trending topics in the microblogging site X (formerly Twitter) in the Philippines.



On X, netizens expressed sadness and paid tribute to the actress.

“This hits different now. 🥲  You will always be remembered, Shan Cai of Meteor Garden. Nakakabigla. Rest in Peace, Barbie Hsu. 🙏,” a netizen wrote.

“Rest is Peace, Barbie Hsu. Thank you for making my childhood happy. Always be my fave version of Meteor Garden. You’ll always be remembered 💙,”  another netizen added.

“oh you started the Asian fever Shan Cai RIP Barbie Hsu,” online user wrote.

On Monday morning, reports of Hsu’s passing circulated online.

According to an article published by Taiwan Focus, Hsu died of pneumonia after contracting influenza during the Lunar New Year holiday.

The sad news was confirmed by Hsu’s sister Dee Hsu on Monday through her agent.

“Our whole family came to Japan for a trip, and my dearest and most kindhearted sister Barbie Hsu died of influenza-induced pneumonia and unfortunately left us,” Hsu’s sister Dee said through her agent.

Hsu became popular in the Philippines for her role as Shancai, the lead female character in the hit 2001 Taiwanese series “Meteor Garden,” where she played opposite Jerry Yan as Daoming Si.
